A resident of an all-inclusive luxury care home in Leicester celebrated her milestone 101st birthday last week.

Cedar Mews, a member of the Berkley Care Group, facilitated a day of activities and hosted a birthday celebration for resident Joan Robinson who turned 101 on 28th March.

Joan was born 28th March 1923 in Peterborough and grew up alongside her older sister, Peggy, in a village in Halston. When Peggy moved to Australia, Joan enjoyed two trips across the globe to visit her sister.

The inspirational 101-year-old served in WW2, training and working at the British Manufacture and Research Company in Graham where she made cannon firing pins for Spitfires and Hurricane fighters. After the war, in 1949, Joan married her husband, Roland, in Middlesbrough, and in 1952 the couple welcomed their first and only child, Malcolm. As a family, they enjoyed many trips around the UK, including trips to visit Joan’s family in Peterborough.

Joan’s birthday celebrations honoured her previous career at M&S where she used to make pyjamas and shirts. Joan, accompanied by her carer Tracey, went on a shopping outing to M&S for a dress to mark the momentous occasion. They also enjoyed tea and cake in the café.

Back at Cedar Mews, where Joan has been a resident for the last seven years, the care home hosted a party which was attended by Joan’s friends and the care home staff. The home arranged for Samantha Oxborough, a professional singer, to provide the entertainment for the party. She sang a roster of Joan’s favourite songs including ‘We Will Meet Again’ and ‘White Cliffs of Dover’.

Joan and all her party guests had a great time celebrating this incredible birthday milestone.

Commenting on the event, Joanne Hughes, Cedar Mews’ General Manager said:

“Joan’s 101st birthday celebration was a truly special occasion for everyone at Cedar Mews. Seeing her smile and reminisce about her remarkable life experiences reminded us of the importance of cherishing each moment.

“This incredible event sparked joy among our residents and staff members who attended the party, and spirits were high throughout the day. Taking the time to celebrate things like this for residents truly enhances our fantastic community here at Cedar Mews, and reminds us all of the love and happiness which underpins everything we do here.

“This will be a day we’ll remember for a long time, and as always we look forward to celebrating more milestone celebrations in the future.”
