Experienced health and social care leader Ali Gopaul joins Orchard Healthcare Group with a remit to strengthen commissioning partnerships, develop regional services and expand its specialist Reconnect dementia and Reconnect mental health care models.
Ali brings extensive operational, strategic and leadership experience to the role, having held senior positions including Operations Manager, Head of Operations and Hospital Director.
Throughout his career, he has led complex service portfolios, managed significant operational budgets and delivered improvements across quality, compliance and digital transformation.
In his new role, Ali will work closely with local authorities, Integrated Care Boards (ICBs) and health commissioners to identify opportunities for regional growth and develop services that respond to the changing needs of local communities.
His appointment comes at an important time for Orchard as it continues to expand its specialist care offer and strengthen relationships with commissioning partners.
‘I’m thrilled to be joining Orchard Healthcare Group at such an exciting time. I was particularly attracted to the organisation because of its strong reputation, its people and its innovative Reconnect Dementia and Reconnect Mental Health care models.
‘I’m certain there is a real opportunity to build on what Orchard already does well, strengthen our commissioning relationships and develop services that make a genuine difference to people and their families.’ He said.
A key part of Ali’s remit will be supporting the continued development of Orchard’s Reconnect Mental Health and Reconnect Dementia Care models.
The specialist pathways are designed to support people living with complex mental health conditions or severe dementia, providing an alternative for individuals whose needs may not be adequately met within traditional care settings.
The models combine specialist-trained teams, enhanced staffing levels and purpose-designed environments with therapeutic, person-centred care. By creating supportive communities tailored around individual needs, Reconnect aims to help people reduce distress, rebuild confidence, maintain independence and achieve meaningful personal outcomes.
Ali said: ‘Specialist pathways such as Reconnect Mental Health and Reconnect Dementia Care have an important role to play in modern health and social care.
‘For people living with complex needs, having the right environment, the right level of support and teams with the right specialist knowledge can make a significant difference to their quality of life.
‘We aim to create safe, therapeutic and person-centred communities where people can live with dignity and purpose, while supporting them to achieve the best outcomes possible.’
Alongside developing Orchard’s specialist services, Ali’s immediate priorities will include supporting occupancy across the organisation’s care facilities, identifying opportunities for regional service development and ensuring commissioning projects continue to meet rigorous quality and compliance standards.
He will work alongside Orchard’s regional teams and external health partners to understand local priorities and develop care pathways that address gaps in provision.
Ali said: ‘Successful commissioning isn’t simply about developing services. It’s about understanding what people and communities need and creating the right pathways and environments to meet those needs.
‘For me, the priority will always be ensuring that every person in our care receives high-quality, dignified and genuinely person-centred support that is tailored to their individual needs.
‘I’m looking forward to working collaboratively with our teams, residents, families and commissioning partners to build on Orchard’s strong foundations and create opportunities for people to achieve meaningful improvements in their everyday lives.’
Orchard is continuing to develop its commissioning approach, with a focus on strengthening partnerships with local authorities and ICBs and expanding access to its specialist Reconnect care models.
Ali will play a central role in identifying new opportunities for service development and helping Orchard respond to the evolving needs of commissioners and the communities it serves.
He added: ‘I’m particularly looking forward to collaborating with our regional teams and external health partners to shape innovative care pathways and expand the Reconnect framework.
As Orchard Healthcare Group looks to the future, Ali’s appointment marks another step in its ambition to grow its regional footprint, strengthen commissioning partnerships and expand specialist provision. By combining strong partnerships with innovative care models such as Reconnect, Orchard is focused on creating more opportunities for people with complex needs to receive the right support, in the right environment, at the right time.
